At Tharrington Smith, we don't deal with cases. We deal with people.

Bringing this single philosophy to every legal action we encounter sets us apart from other firms. Tharrington Smith, LLP, has grown into a practice that reaches across the state with a reputation that reaches across the nation.

We invite you to learn about our passions-the law, the arts, the community. Explore this site and you'll discover more than two dozen legal experts experienced in state and federal courts at both trial and appellate levels. You'll discover our affinity for the arts and our commitment to giving back to the community.

Our core proficiencies are family law, education law, criminal defense, and civil litigation, but those are hardly the extent of what we offer. From construction disputes to disciplinary proceedings and election protests; intellectual property issues to personal injury; and employment discrimination to divorce, we've helped countless individuals, companies and governmental boards find resolutions to their legal issues since 1964.

Divorce and Family Law

Family law is a cornerstone at Tharrington Smith. Its lasting importance in our practice reflects our passion to apply our expertise to each situation, whether it is resolved through negotiation of a separation agreement, mediation, collaborative law, arbitration or litigation through the courts. At the heart of our family law practice is our understanding of the extraordinary personal crisis that divorce brings to spouses, children and extended family members. We bring to every client strength, knowledge, experience, and sensitivity.

Family law attorneys at Tharrington Smith are state and national leaders in the field. Five of our lawyers are certified by the North Carolina State Bar as family law specialists and family financial mediators. Six attorneys were selected for inclusion in the 2011 edition of North Carolina Super Lawyers*; five are included in the 2011 edition of Best Lawyers in America; three are former judges; and three have headed the statewide family law section of the North Carolina Bar Association and are fellows in the selective American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
